Thanks to generous funding from Lex Grow Trees, we’ll be planting 45 trees to help increase the area’s tree canopy, enhance biodiversity, and establish African Cemetery No. 2 as an accredited Level 1 Arboretum. Located in an area with one of the lowest percentage of tree canopy cover in Lexington, the 1st District, African Cemetery No. 2 holds a wealth of African American history, much of it connected to the beginnings of the horse racing industry.
No experience necessary, just come ready to learn, contribute, and have fun. We’ll provide the tools, guidance, and training on proper tree planting techniques, and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and connect with other community members. This event is kid-friendly and offers refreshments, making it a great way to spend a morning outdoors with family and friends.
Let’s work together to create a greener, more beautiful Lexington and honor the legacy of African Cemetery No. 2. Your participation will not only help to improve the environment but also contribute to the ongoing preservation of this important historical site.
